What is an IBCLC?

An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is a health care professional who specializes in the clinical management of breastfeeding. IBCLC certificants are certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) by passing a rigorous examination. The examination program is accredited by the U.S. National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). IBCLC certificants work in a wide variety of health care settings including hospitals, pediatric offices, public health clinics, and private practice.

Facilities That Hire IBCLCs!

IBLCE and ILCA continue to recognize hospitals, birthing facilities, and birthing services that have currently certified IBCLC certificants on staff and a dedicated lactation program. The IBCLC Care Directory currently lists Hopsital-Based Facilities that have one or more IBCLC certificants on staff, a dedicated lactation support program 5-7 days a week, have provided training for the medical staff that care for breastfeeding families, and have promoted projects to provide support for breastfeeding mothers or the lactation consultant profession.
